Opposites As Equally Stubborn

Relationships between men and women are becoming briefer, more focused on oneself, and increasingly bitter.

"One in three women report being highly resentful of men,
while one in six men is highly resentful of women." [i]

Research shows vast differences between the sexes which are not going away. Many of these will surprise you.

Men are more intrigued by casual sex and tend to be opportunists, but try to conceal it.  Women are more easily offended and are more insistent in arguments, but insist that it is not so. Men are more highly stressed in personal confrontations and withdraw to avoid unpleasantries, which women interpret as indifference.

Dual standards continue everywhere, although idealists expect us to treat men and women the same.  We struggle to protect women against bad men, while we expect men to take care of themselves.  Relationships obligate men more than women, so that "Runaway Bride" is a funny movie whereas a "Runaway Groom" would be a total jerk.

We present ourselves as we wish to be seen, and we misinterpret our opposites. Together we stage an elaborate costume masquerade in which we chat casually or dance closely cheek to cheek but are not at all who we appear to me. Our continuing misunderstanding contributes to one unsatisfactory relationship after another.
